چکیده

phyllosilicates, jarosite has been found in associationwith the Al-phyllosilicate unit (Fig. 3; 11; 25]. Terra Sirenum hosts jarosite in sediments within paleolakes but it has not yet been found in plateau phyllosilicates. Libya Montes and Hellas are still to be examined in our global survey. Characterization of phyllosilicates observed in the central Mawrth Vallis region, Mars, their potential formational processes, and implications for past climate

[1] Mawrth Vallis contains one of the largest exposures of phyllosilicates on Mars. Nontronite, montmorillonite, kaolinite, and hydrated silica have been identified throughout the region using data from the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM). In addition, saponite has been identified in one observation within a crater. These individual minerals are identified and disti...

An in-situ record of major environmental transitions on earlyMars at Northeast Syrtis Major

[1] The Noachian-Hesperian transition on Mars was a period marked by changes in volcanic processes and styles of aqueous alteration. Understanding the timing and nature of environmental change requires the exploration of units recording both sets of processes. Herein, we report the compositional stratigraphy of distinctive Noachian to Hesperian units along the northeastern margin of the Syrtis ...

Orbital evidence for clay and acidic sulfate assemblages on Mars based on mineralogical analogs from Rio Tinto, Spain

Outcrops of hydrated minerals are widespread across the surface of Mars, with clay minerals and sulfates being commonly identified phases. Orbitally-based reflectance spectra are often used to classify these hydrated components in terms of a single mineralogy, although most surfaces likely contain multiple minerals that have the potential to record local geochemical conditions and processes. Re...

Orbital identification of carbonate-bearing rocks on Mars.

Geochemical models for Mars predict carbonate formation during aqueous alteration. Carbonate-bearing rocks had not previously been detected on Mars' surface, but Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter mapping reveals a regional rock layer with near-infrared spectral characteristics that are consistent with the presence of magnesium carbonate in the Nili Fossae region. The carbonate is closely associated w...

Sulfur dioxide inhibits calcium carbonate precipitation: Implications for early Mars and Earth

[1] Recent studies have suggested a role for sulfur dioxide (SO2) in maintaining relatively warm surface temperatures on early Mars. Here we show experimentally, that SO2 concentrations orders of magnitude lower than those required for it to have been of climatic importance strongly affect the aqueous chemistry and the precipitated mineral assemblage. At near-neutral pH, part-per-billion concen...
